The Civic Corruption

Grzegorz Schetyna, one of the key leaders of the Civic Platform, the ruling party in Poland should have never been nominated to the position of the Sejm (the lower house of the Polish parliament) speaker. He is implicated in the last year's corruption scandal known as afera hazardowa. In 2006 and 2007 he was closely associated with the former MP Beata Sawicka, e.g. sharing the same regional office, who was caught red-handed when accepting a bribe.

The western media continue to describe the Civic Platform as a pro-European center-right party. Civic Platform is neither pro-European nor center-right. These are meaningless terms in this context. Mr. Schetyna's political associates from the region of Lower Silesia (Dolny Śląsk) made big money making funny loans to cash-starved state hospitals which would have been impossible without his personal blessing. His friends are channeling European Union help funds to their own advantage. Corruption is clearly the word that fits Mr. Schetyna very well.

Last year's corruption scandal in the gambling industry involved both Schetyna and two other top leaders of the Civic Platform: Mirosław Drzewiecki (Łódź) and Zbigniew Chlebowski (Lower Silesia). Schetyna, who held the post of the interior minister, met the key suspect, Ryszard Sobiesiak, at the regional airport in Wrocław. Schetyna clearly acted against the interest of Poland as the country's minister. It boggles the mind how he could have been nominated the Sejm speaker.
